In 1980, in an era when decentralization was an important part of Mexico’s national development, a group of academics from UNAM founded, in the city of Guanajuato, an institution dedicated to basic research and high-level education in the field of mathematics. Thus CIMAT (Centro de Investigación en Matemáticas A.C., Mathematics Research Center) was born.

Over the years CIMAT’s academic activity has been diversified and expanded to the point where it is now the leading research institution in its field outside of Mexico City, thanks to the high academic standards of its researchers, its vast scientific output and its ever-increasing share of the international scientific scene. CIMAT organizes conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops, and offers bachelor’s, master's and doctorate degrees that are recognized internationally for their excellence.

CIMAT also has built strong links with the public, social, and business sectors of Mexican society, focusing on projects that help solve problems, particularly those related to technological innovation. In addition to its main campus in Guanajuato, CIMAT has established units in the cities of Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and Monterrey and Merida, where it contributes to the competitiveness and the growth of businesses and organizations, to the strengthening of mathematics skills in society at large, and to meeting the demand for a high-level professional and scientific workforce.

Mission:

CIMAT is a public research center within the CONACYT Centers System, dedicated to the generation, transmission and application of expertise in the areas of mathematics, statistics and computer science.

Oriented towards scientific research, high-level graduate education and training, the improvement of mathematical knowledge in society, and solving problems that fall within its areas of interest, CIMAT seeks to contribute to the scientific and technological development of Mexico.

Vision:

To be a center of research recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in its fields of expertise; with an ability to attract and bring together teams of high level scientific thinkers  and to be a model of efficiency, growth and social impact for other research centers.

Objectives:

CIMAT has three major objectives:

  • To generate scientific knowledge through research in its areas of expertise
  • To provide undergraduate and graduate programs in the specialty areas of the Center,
  • To strengthen its relationships with the public, private and social sectors through applied research projects, technology and consultancy services, educational and training programs, and the dissemination of mathematical knowledge.
